Hermès Eau des Merveilles Eau de Toilette 50ml is a sparkling, woody-amber fragrance launched in 2004 — composed by Ralf Schwieger and Nathalie Feisthauer for the French luxury house. Famous for its unusual structure, the fragrance flips the traditional perfume pyramid: notes typically reserved for base layers appear at the top, and citrus-aromatic top notes linger into the drydown. Bigarade orange, Italian lemon, elemi, pink pepper and Indonesian pepper open the fragrance; ambergris accord and oak carry the heart; and a base of cedar, vetiver, balsam of Peru and benzoin leaves a polished, woody-amber trail.

About Hermès

Hermès is a French luxury goods house founded in 1837 in Paris by Thierry Hermès, originally as a harness and saddlery workshop serving European nobility. The brand entered fragrance in 1951 with Eau d'Hermès and has continued to produce some of the most-respected compositions in modern perfumery — including the Hermessence collection and signatures like Terre d'Hermès. Eau des Merveilles is one of the brand's most-loved feminine signatures.

The story behind Eau des Merveilles

"Merveilles" means "wonders" in French, and the fragrance was conceived around the idea of a luminous, slightly mysterious feminine signature without the usual floral foundations. The unconventional pyramid structure — putting woody-amber notes at the top and bright citrus-spices in the drydown — was a deliberate departure from contemporary feminine perfumery norms. The bottle takes a soft golden-orange tinted glass with the brand's recognisable scarf-cap detail.

Who it's for

Eau des Merveilles suits women drawn to woody-amber fragrances with a sparkling citrus-spice character — wearers of Bvlgari Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert, Diptyque Eau Duelle, or Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Universalis, who want a more characterful French alternative. Best year-round, leaning slightly to autumn and warmer days; ideal for office, dinner and casual evening wear.

How to wear it

  1. Spray onto pulse points — wrists, base of the throat, behind the ears — from around 15cm.
  2. Two to three sprays for daytime; build up gently for longer evening wear.
  3. Apply over an unscented body lotion to extend longevity.
